Just because clothing is labelled 100% cotton do not assume it is the best choice for your child.
Conveniently grown cotton contains residue and pesticides. During each stage of production more toxic chemicals are added from harsh petroleum scours, softness, brightness and heavy metals to soil retardants, ammonia and formaldehyde and finally synthetic chemical dyes. Many of these toxins are linked to a range of health problems including allergies, insomnia, immune disorders, cancer and neurological disorders.
Babies are especially vulnerable since their skin is thinner, more fragile and are unable to sweat to regulate body temperature.
Buying organic cotton is a wise choice and not only will you be protecting your child’s health but also supporting a sustainable future for agriculture so our children and future generations will inherit a secure and safe world.
Organic cotton since it is not treated with harsh chemicals that weaken the fiber is more longer lasting and will last up to 100 washes before showing wear in comparison the regular cotton will start to weaken after 10-20 washes. It should be noted both cottons will have the same shrinkage.
When shopping look for garments with GOTS Certified Organic Cotton (Global Organic Textile Standard) because regular organic cotton can still be treated with toxic dyes and chemicals. Second choice would be Oeko-Tek labelling which indicates chemical processes are not used but chemicals deemed safe can be used in particular if you read fire retardant avoid this finish.
