Self cleaning clothing is on the horizon. There are 2 distinct approaches.
- Nanotechnology which is actively being researched by the USA Military to use for active combat uniforms
- Chemical treatments
The consumer market can already purchase nanotechnology from a few companies such as the Japanese shirt manufacturer Takino.
There is also a crowd funded company called Silic that has developed a hydrophobic nanotechnology which causes water based liquids to roll off the surface of a fabric.
The Chinese are experimenting with a coating of titanium dioxide and a photocatalyst that cleans stains when clothing is exposed to the sun for 2 hours.
All of these ideas would be beneficial to people with disabilities looking to stay fresh and clean looking throughout the day.
I will keep you informed of any new developments coming up that look promising meantime look for clothing using bamboo which has natural anti bacterial properties. There was a wave of antimicrobial clothing particularly in the active wear market but they proved to wash out pretty quickly so not practical.
